Staying On Top Of Your Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Dog receiving a vaccination

Bringing home a new puppy? Super exciting! But don’t forget one of the most important parts of raising a healthy pup: vaccinations.

Just like human babies, puppies need a series of vaccines to protect them from dangerous — and potentially deadly — diseases. Staying on schedule helps build their immunity and gives them the best start in life.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what to expect:

Core Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Age Vaccines 6–8 weeks Distemper, Parvovirus (DHPP combo)

10–12 weeks DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) booster, Bordetella (kennel cough)

14–16 weeks Final DHPP, Rabies

12–16 weeks Leptospirosis, Lyme, or Canine Influenza (optional, based on lifestyle & vet advice)

Why Timing Matters

Puppies do receive some immunity from their mother, but that fades fast. That’s why vaccines are spaced out in a series — to safely build strong, long-lasting protection during their most vulnerable months.

Until all vaccines are complete, it’s best to avoid:

  • Dog parks or public places

  • Contact with unknown dogs

  • Boarding, daycare, or grooming facilities

Booster Shots & Adult Vaccines

After their puppy shots, your dog will need booster vaccines:

  • DHPP: Every 1–3 years

  • Rabies: As required by local law (typically every 1–3 years)

  • Other lifestyle vaccines: As recommended by your vet

Final Woof

Vaccinations may not be the most exciting part of puppy life, but they’re one of the most important. Keeping your pup on schedule protects them — and the other dogs they’ll meet — from serious illness.
